Bike Smart, Stay Safe! Summer Tips for Kids and Parents

By: Miss Kim

Summer is the perfect time to ride your bike! It’s fun, it’s fast, and it feels like freedom. But riding safe is even cooler. The Bible says, “Wise people see danger and get out of the way” (Proverbs 22:3). That means smart kids ride with their heads up and helmets on. Ready to be a smart rider this summer? Let’s go!

1. Wear That Helmet

Your helmet is your head’s best friend. Even if you think you look goofy, wear it anyway. It protects your brain, and God gave you that brain for a reason! In Pennsylvania, kids under 12 must wear a helmet. But even older kids should wear one every time. Don’t ride without it, no excuses.

2. Follow the Rules

If you’re riding on the street, you have to follow the same rules as cars:

Ride on the right side of the road, in the same direction as traffic. Stop at red lights and stop signs, just like cars do. Use hand signals to show where you’re going. All signals use your left arm: Left turn: Left arm straight out Right turn: Left arm bent up at the elbow Stop or slow down: Left arm bent down at the elbow

If there’s a sidewalk or trail, you can ride there too, but always watch for people walking and give them space.

3. Real Story: Don’t Ride Around Cars

This really happened. I was parking my van, and a kid started riding his bike around my moving car. I couldn’t see him! I had to roll down my window and tell him to move, because I could have hit him without even knowing it.

Please, never ride around a car that’s backing up, pulling in, or moving. Stay far away and wait. A car can’t stop as fast as a bike.

4. Be Kind on the Sidewalk

If you’re riding where people are walking, slow down. Say, “On your left!” if you’re going to pass someone. Don’t scare them by zooming past.

And if you see a dog, give it space! Dogs don’t always understand bikes and might get nervous or try to chase you. Don’t ride too close or try to show off. Just stay calm and ride safely past.

5. Look Where You’re Going

Keep your eyes ahead and your ears open. No looking at your feet. No texting. And definitely no headphones in both ears. You need to hear if someone yells, if a car honks, or if a dog barks.

Look both ways at every street. Watch out for cars coming from driveways. Look behind you before you turn. Stay alert!

6. Lock It Up and Use Your Own

When you’re done riding, lock up your bike! Use a strong lock and park it somewhere safe. Don’t block walkways or doors.

Also, only ride your own bike. Someone else’s bike might not fit you, or it might be broken. Always ask first. And never take a ride without permission.

7. Check In Before You Ride Out

Tell your parents or the grown-up in charge where you’re going and when you’ll be back. If something goes wrong, they need to know where to look.

The Bible says, “Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord” (Colossians 3:20). Telling them your plan is one simple way to show respect, and it keeps you safe.

Ride Safe, Ride Wise, Have Fun!

Biking is a blast, but it’s even better when you ride smart. Wear your helmet. Follow the rules. Be kind. And stay alert.

When you ride with respect, you’re showing love for others, and that’s what Jesus wants from us every day.

Let’s make this summer the safest, most fun one yet. You’ve got this! Now go ride!
